Distinguishing Worldly Passions (Titus 2:12, 1 John 2:15-17, Galatians 5:19-21)

Don Johnson, June 13, 2010

Part of the Godliness-Worldliness series, preached at a Sun Study service

In this lesson we distinguish between things that a Christian might do ('works of the flesh') that are ungodly and Scripturally prohibited and the worldly desires a Christian might have ('lusts of the flesh') that hinder our relationship with Christ. In making this distinction we arrive at a definition of worldliness.

Titus 2:12

12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, (ESV)

1 John 2:15-17

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. (ESV)

Galatians 5:19-21

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (ESV)
